Understanding Superficial Venous Reflux
Your legs are made up of a network of veins that contain valves which open and close, helping to cycle blood through your legs and back to your heart. Venous reflux disease develops when the valves that keep blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged or diseased. This can cause blood to pool in your legs and lead to a variety of symptoms, such as pain, swelling, swollen limbs, leg heaviness and fatigue, as well as skin changes including skin ulcers, and varicose veins.

Spider veins, medically known as telangiectases, are dilated capillary veins less than 2mm in diameter. They are small, appearing as blue-to-red blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin in either lines or web-like patterns.
Spider veins are most often visible on the legs, but can also appear around the nose and lips. Also known as “broken veins”, spider veins rarely cause any physical symptoms, and when they do, patients report experiencing mild burning or itching.
Varicose veins are lumpy, bulging blue vessels just beneath the surface of the skin. They are usually ¼ inch or more in diameter, and often are both unsightly and painful, leading patients to seek vein treatment for relief.
Clotted varicose veins may cause a symptom known as phleditis, which presents as hot, red, and painful skin at the site of the clot. Varicose vein sufferers often also complain of fatigue, restless legs at night, pain, aches, itching, throbbing and swelling, as well as a sensation of heaviness or cramping.
Facial veins are the amongst the most troublesome because they affect your appearance. Our vein clinic offers laser treatments for facial veins.
Vein Treatments at Southern Vein & Laser Center
Prior to providing any vein treatments, our vein specialists conduct a thorough evaluation that includes an ultrasound exam and review of both current and past symptoms. We will then prescribe a treatment that provides the best possible resolution to your specific vein condition.
Our Vein Clinic
Treatments for vein disorders come in numerous forms, depending on the condition in question. Southern Vein & Laser Center is pleased to provide access to cutting-edge treatments that can reduce pain, swelling, and unsightly appearance, providing relief to patients.
The VNUS Closure Procedure
Also known as the Venefit™ procedure, the minimally invasive VNUS Closure® procedure provides patients with a non-surgical alternative to varicose vein management. This process places a specially designed catheter into diseased veins that can then act as a conduit for radiofrequency energy. This heats the walls of affected veins, resulting in shrinkage of the collagen cells that hold affected veins open. VNUS® procedures offer long-lasting relief with little to no scarring.
A treatment for varicose veins, ambulatory phlebectomy uses small slit-like incisions in the skin to remove diseased veins. Also known as stab avulsion or microphlebectomy, this minimally-invasive procedure is relatively pain-free and has virtually no recovery time. After treatments are complete, patients must wear a compression stocking to accelerate healing.
Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that treats spider and varicose veins. It is performed by injecting a solution into diseased veins that leads to blood clotting and closure of the affected veins over time. Treatments are performed in an outpatient setting and healing takes four to six weeks. Depending on disease severity, spider veins respond to therapy in three to six weeks while varicose veins respond in three to four months.
VenaCure EVLT™ is an FDA-approved procedure that treats varicose veins by sealing off blood flow. In this treatment, veins are mapped out with ultrasound in order to guide a thin laser fiber into the faulty veins. This process seals veins permanently, leading to immediate relief. VenaCure EVLT™ takes approximately one hour to complete with little to no recovery time.
VenaSeal™ Closure System
A non-thermal treatment, VenaSeal™ Closure treats small varicose veins when a laser is inappropriate. In this procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the leg under local anesthetic. Through this catheter, small amounts of medical adhesive are injected, resulting in immediate and permanent blockage of blood flow. Relief is instantaneous, with minimal recovery time and little swelling or bruising.
